The Overture (โหมโรง), Shutter (ชัตเตอร์ กดติดวิญญาณ), and Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (ลุงบุญมีระลึกชาติ) at Maridon Museum's Thai film series, from October 12.

Butler's Maridon Museum will show three Thai movies as part of a Thailand Film Series in October and November: The Overture (โหมโรง), Shutter (ชัตเตอร์ กดติดวิญญาณ), and Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (ลุงบุญมีระลึกชาติ). A 2004 Variety review summarizes The Overture, which plays on October 12:
Starting with the talented young Sorn spontaneously playing elder brother’s ranard-ek in his village, pic flashes forward to the deathbed of the older Sorn (Adul Dulyarat) and thereafter shuffles timelines with a series of parallel narratives. When Sorn’s brother is beaten to death by rival musicians, the boys’ father confiscates Sorn’s instrument. Quietly defiant, Sorn surreptitiously practices in a deserted temple until dad relents, and the boy’s formal musical training begins.

As an arrogant youth, impressed by his own talent, Sorn (Anuchit Saphanphong) misses band rehearsals and earns money by guessing notes blindfolded. He wows all who hear his playing, from commoners to royalty. However, while touring Bangkok with his father, he’s outclassed by rival musician Im Khun (Narongrit Tosa-nga) during a spontaneous contest.

Humbled in defeat, Sorn has a creative epiphany that coincides with an invitation to join the royal court of a prince as a top musician. Gig leads to a return match between Sorn and maestro Khun.
The movie starts at 6:00 pm and reservations are required to be made by phone: 724-282-0123. It will be presented by Slippery Rock University professor Dr. Ken Harris.

The Maridon Museum is an Asian art museum at 322 N. McKean St. in downtown Butler (map) that runs film series periodically throughout the year, in addition to art classes, book club meetings, and its regular exhibits.
