1985 Jackie Chan movie Police Story (警察故事系列) in Pittsburgh, from April 10.


The 1985 Jackie Chan movie Police Story (警察故事系列) will play at the Row House Lawrenceville from April 10, part of its Live Action Cartoons film series.
Jackie Chan plays a Hong-Kong cop, who scores his first big hit by single-handedly capturing and arresting a big drug- lord. When he’s framed for murder, he has to clear his name, whilst keeping himself from getting killed or arrested, and keeping his girlfriend from leaving him.
It plays from April 10 through 16, and tickets are available online. The Row House Cinema is a single-screen theater located at 4115 Butler St. in Lawrenceville (map).

2026 Hong Kong film Night King (夜王) in Pittsburgh, from February 20.


The 2026 Hong Kong film Night King (夜王) will play in Pittsburgh from February 20.
The year is 2012. The once-glamourous Club EJ suddenly experiences a hostile takeover. Much like the nightclub industry, the glory days are over for the club’s manager, Foon (Dayo Wong), despite having stood tall in East Tsim Sha Tsui for decades. To make things worse for Foon, the club’s new CEO is none other than his cutthroat ex-wife, Madame V (Sammi Cheng)! Determined to change things up, she leaves Foon and his hostesses with no choice but to transform and modernize in order to breathe new life into their business. Little did they know, a powerful conglomerate had been pulling the strings all along to shut down Club EJ for good. To save their neon empire, Foon and V must join forces and make an epic last stand with the hostesses against what seems to be inevitable doom.

A Better Tomorrow (英雄本色) in Pittsburgh from March 1, part of Hong Kong Cinema Classics series.


The 1986 film A Better Tomorrow (英雄本色) returns to Pittsburgh from March 1 as part of a Hong Kong Cinema Classics series.
This story is the tale of two brothers: one a successful counterfeiter and the younger a fledgling graduate of the HK police academy. The plot revolves around the split when the younger brother learns the other is a criminal and the efforts of the criminal brother to reform. Along the way are plenty of heists, double-crosses, and shoot outs. Includes "A Better Tomorrow: An Interview with John Woo" following the feature content.
The movie played here in the fall as part of an 11-film Hong Kong Cinema Classics series. It plays locally on March 1, 2, and 4 at the AMC Loews Waterfront, AMC Westmoreland in Greensburg, and the Cinemark theaters in North Hills and Robinson. Tickets are available online.

1992 Hong Kong film Hard Boiled (辣手神) in Pittsburgh as Hong Kong Cinema Classics return, January 25, 26, and 28.


The 1992 Hong Kong film Hard Boiled (辣手神) will play in Pittsburgh as Hong Kong Cinema Classics return to local theaters this year, following a run at the Harris Theater last fall.
Mobsters are smuggling guns into Hong Kong. The police orchestrate a raid at a teahouse where an ace detective loses his partner. Meanwhile, the two main gun smugglers are having a war over territory, and a young new gun is enlisted to wipe out informants and overcome barriers to growth. The detective, acting from inside sources, gets closer to the ring leaders and eventually must work with the inside man directly. Includes "Hard Boiled: A Conversation Between John Woo and Jim Branscome" following the feature content.
It plays locally at the AMC Loews Waterfront, AMC Westmoreland in Greensburg, the Cinemark theaters in McCandless and Robinson, and the Row House Hollywood in Dormont on the 25th and 28th, and tickets are available online.

Classic Hong Kong films return to Pittsburgh in 2026.


Three classic Hong Kong films have been announced for screenings in Pittsburgh-area theaters in 2026.
These three, and several others, played at the Harris Theater in September and October as part of a Hong Kong Cinema Classics series. These three films will play, so far, at the Cinemark theaters in McCandless and Robinson, and tickets are available online.

Seven more classic Hong Kong films will play at the Harris Theater at various times this week, part of a Hong Kong Cinema Classics series of films from the 1980s and 1990s.

The University of Pittsburgh's Asian Studies Center and Global Hub will host a Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration on October 3 from 12:00 pm.

1986 Hong Kong film Peking Opera Blues (刀馬旦) in Pittsburgh, September 28 - October 6, part of Hong Kong Cinema Classics series.


The 1986 Hong Kong film Peking Opera Blues (刀馬旦) will play in Pittsburgh from September 28 through Octoer 6, part of a Hong Kong Cinema Classics series at the Harris Theater featuring 11 Hong Kong films from the 1980s and 1990s.
Perhaps no other film better displays the blink-and-you-miss-it inventiveness of Tsui Hark than Peking Opera Blues. It isn’t just one of the greatest Hong Kong action movies of all time, or merely an exquisite combination of political history and gender-defying performance. Tsui’s enthralling balance of tone, editing patterns, and comedic role-playing means the film is all of these things at warp speed, a dazzling expression of genre multiplicity that shifts between modes moment to moment. This flexibility extends to the cast: three women (Brigitte Lin, Sally Yeh, and Cherie Chung), a spy, an actor, and a musician, are assuming roles to survive the violent end of the Qing Dynasty, aligning themselves with warlords, revolutionaries, seducers, and friends. Each identity opens up traps, expectations, and freedoms. Whether on the stage or in a melee, this is a film that plays out under a ruthless and overwhelming urge to execute the perfect stunt—both for laughs and for something deadly serious.

First batch of films for 2025 SCREENSHOT: Asia Film Festival, running September 20 through 28, announced.


SCREENSHOT has announced the first batch of films for its 2025 SCREENSHOT: Asia Film Festival, running from September 20 through 28. The initial lineup consists of 12 films, with more to be announced later, including

  • A Useful Ghost (ผีใช้ได้ค่ะ) - 2025, Thailand
  • Blue Sun Palace (蓝色太阳宫) - 2024, United States
  • Daughter's Daughter (女兒的女兒) - 2024, Taiwan
  • Missing Child Videotape (ミッシング・チャイルド・ビデオテープ) - 2024, Japan
  • Mixed Modern (ミックスモダン) - 2025, Japan
  • Pavane for an Infant (搖籃凡世) - 2024, Malaysia
  • The Botanist (植物学家) - 2025, China
  • Winter in Sokcho - 2024, France

Ticket and showtime information will be announced later, with screenings to be held around Oakland and the downtown Cultural District. SCREENSHOT: ASIA, which puts on the annual festival along with other Asian programming,
is a joint project from the Film and Media Studies Program and the Asian Studies Center that brings together students, faculty, and community members to create a shared awareness of Asian and Asian American experiences through contemporary film and media. Using film, video, and other on-screen arts, the series provides a forum to learn about Asian art, whether it is a classic work of cinema, a film by an emerging director, or a documentary addressing contemporary social concerns. The programming allows us to reflect on the importance of visual arts, current arts technology, and the place of cultural experiences in a global educational experience.

HK Dim Sum holds Grand Opening in Oakland today, May 8.


HK Dim Sum, also stylized Hong Kong Dim Sum, has officially grand opened today in North Oakland. It soft opened back on April 15 and is located at 4520 Centre Ave. in North Oakland's One on Centre complex (map). The menu features a variety of dumpling, dim sum, and dessert dishes in addition to more commonly-found rice and noodle entrees, and the space features a large dining room plus three private rooms for events. Announced back in September 2023, HK Dim Sum was aiming to help fill in one of the remaining gaps in Pittsburgh's Asian food scene. Its hours are currently 11:00 am to 10:00 pm.

Taste of Asia Asian Food Festival, May 11 at Heinz History Center.


The third annual Taste of Asia Asian Food Festival will take place on May 11 at the Heinz History Center. The three-hour festival will feature food from numerous restaurants plus cultural performances and other attractions. 

Experience Asian culture and flavors at the Taste of Asia program.

Join the History Center on a cultural and culinary journey to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month at Taste of Asia.

Presented in partnership with the Japan-America Society of Pennsylvania and the Asian American Chamber of Commerce of Pittsburgh, the program will highlight Asian American contributions of the past and present in Pittsburgh.

Indulge in delicious bites from an assortment of local Asian restaurants, explore the history of Pittsburgh’s Asian American community with the Detre Library & Archives, and watch live performances to learn about cultural celebrations.

Hong Kong Dim Sum in Oakland eyes April 15 soft opening.


Hong Kong Dim Sum management confirms it is working on some finishing touches and aiming for an April 15 soft opening. It will be located at 4520 Centre Ave. in North Oakland's One on Centre complex (map). The space features a large dining room plus three private rooms for events. Announced back in September 2023, Hong Kong Dim Sum was to help fill in one of the remaining gaps in Pittsburgh's Asian food scene, though dim sum offerings have expanded around town since then.

The management team shared a few additional photos of dishes and sauces its working on.

American premiere of Miss Julie, adapted by Amy Ng, in Pittsburgh April 18 through May 4.


The Pittsburgh International Classic Theatre will present a production of Miss Julie, adapted by Amy Ng, from April 18 through May 4.
Following on the heels of the hit productions in London and Hong Kong, PICT is thrilled to stage the AMERICAN PREMIERE of this brilliant adaptation of August Strindberg’s classic play by acclaimed playwright Amy Ng.

It’s Chinese New Year in post-World War II Hong Kong. Julie is the daughter of the island’s former British governor newly released from the Japanese internment camp. When her father is away for the holiday weekend, Miss Julie, who was raised in British colonial Hong Kong, comes downstairs to join the servants as they party initiating a sexually charged power game with her father’s Chinese chauffeur who is engaged to the kitchen servant Christine. What starts as a lark descends into a fight for survival as sex, power, money and race collide on a hot night in the Pearl River Delta.

New photos from Hong Kong Dim Sum, set to open in Oakland in the next two weeks.


The development team shares new photos from inside Hong Kong Dim Sum, aiming to open in the next two weeks in Oakland.


It will be located at 4520 Centre Ave. in North Oakland's One on Centre complex (map). The space features a large dining room plus three private rooms for events. Announced back in September 2023, Hong Kong Dim Sum was to help fill in one of the remaining gaps in Pittsburgh's Asian food scene, though dim sum offerings have expanded around town since then.

HK Dim Sum is hiring ahead of its planned opening, and is recruiting server/waitstaff, host, dishwasher, busser, and line/prep cook positions. Those interested may text 917-618-7307 or 718-415-0546 to apply.

The restaurant and vendor line-up includes, so far: Bombay & Burgh, Chengdu Gourmet, Hungry Panda, HK Dim Sum, Kung Fu Chicken 2, Nan Xiang Soup Dumplings, Pho Van, Szechuan Spice House, Sushi Fuku, Tous les Jours, Yujian Bao, and 1:11 Juice Bar, with a few others set to be announced soon.

The 1995 Wong Kar-wai film Fallen Angels (墮落天使) will play at the Row House Cinema in Lawrenceville from February 28 as part of its Big 3-0 film series of movies turning 30 years old.
Originally conceived as a segment of Chungking Express, Fallen Angels spun off into its own hallucinatory, neon-colored story of lost souls looking for human connection.
It runs through March 6 and tickets are available online. The single-screen theater is located at 4115 Butler Street in Lawrenceville (map).
