2025 documentary Queer as Punk in Pittsburgh, April 11.

The 2025 film Queer as Punk will play in Pittsburgh on April 11, a collaboration between SCREENSHOT: ASIA, JADED, and Aquarius (AQUARIUS (Alliance of Queer Underrepresented Asians in Recognition of Intersectionality to Uphold Solidarity). A synopsis, from the Singapore International Film Festival:
Openly queer punk-rock band Shh… Diam! turns up their music against rising conservatism and political upheaval in Malaysia.

Since meeting at a pool party in 2009, Faris, Yon and Yoyo have become a household name for their daring and snarky anthems celebrating queer desire and rage. Just as Faris begins his gender transition, Yon prepares to welcome a child and Yoyo considers migration, Malaysia escalates its rhetoric on purity and begins enacting corporal punishment on LGBTQ individuals. Through it all, the trio endeavours to continue their song.

Queer as Punk is a frank and immersive look at the private lives of the Shh… Diam (Malay for “keep quiet”) members on their world tour. More than a document of the times, the documentary elucidates and affirms the choice to leave for safety, or stay to continue resisting.

The free screening starts at 11:00 am at Frick Fine Arts Auditorium in Oakland (map) and is followed by a Q&A with AQUARIUS.

ASIA POP LECTURE: "When Two Worlds Collide: K-pop Idols & Influencer Marketing," April 1 at Pitt.

The University of Pittsburgh's Asian Studies Center will host Dr. Mathieu Berbiguier and his talk "When Two Worlds Collide: K-pop Idols & Influencer Marketing" on April 1, part of the Center's ASIA POP lecture series.

K-pop idols have long been perceived as the antithesis of authenticity, manufactured personas shaped by entertainment companies. Yet the global rise of influencer marketing, built on relatability and vulnerability, has pushed those same companies to rewrite the rules. Dr. Mathieu Berbiguier examines how Korean entertainment companies increasingly adopt influencer marketing codes — "authentic storytelling," mental health disclosure, and less scripted formats — to reshape the idol persona and deepen parasocial bonds with fans. Drawing on textual analysis and fan discourse, Dr. Berbiguier argues that the convergence of idol culture and influencer logics reveals less a collision than a mutual absorption, one that speaks to a broader, Euro-American-centered demand for authenticity in popular culture.

Dr. Berbiguier is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Korean Studies at Carnegie Mellon University. Since receiving his Ph.D. in Asian Languages and Cultures from the University of California, Los Angeles, Dr. Berbiguier's research has primarily focused on the nuances of K-pop culture, exploring power dynamics in fan communities and shedding light on how these interactions shape perceptions of authenticity in Korean popular culture.

The talk starts at 6:00 pm in 205 David Lawrence Hall (map) and is free and open to the public.

Japanese metal band HANABIE。 returns to Pittsburgh, March 20.

Japanese metal band HANABIE。will return to Pittsburgh on March 20, part of their North American tour with Nekrogoblikon and Enterprise Earth. Their Reddit fanpage provides an introduction:
Loud rock band HANABIE。formed at their school light music club in June 2015. Centering in Kichijōji, Tokyo, they started performing live around areas such as Shinjuku and Tachikawa.

The sound of Hanabie features the sound mixture of metalcore, hardcore, Hip-Hop, and J-POP. Their 1st album, "Girls Manifest" was released in 2020. With this album, they have established their own genre "HARAJUKUCORE"

Their live performances have a speed and power that exceeds expectations and captivates their audience. Yukina's powerful screaming/growling vocals never leave anyone without being amazed, along with this excellent melodic lines given by the clean voice of Matsuri, this is a complete basis for an amazing metalcore band but as for them it isn't enough they add different layers of voices between rap lines. If vocally they are great, in the instrumental part they're not left behind, aggressive, heavy, and dynamic. Certainly to define this band you need at least two words: dynamic and powerful.
The band played Preserving Underground in New Kensington in September 2023 and March 2025, and the Roxian Theatre in September 2024.

The all ages show at the Roxian Theatre in McKees Rocks (map) begins at 6:00 pm, and tickets are available online.

Toshiko Akiyoshi’s ‘Kogun’: Narrating a Lone Soldier’s Experience in Nō Jazz, February 24 at Pitt.

The University of Pittsburgh's Asian Studies Center will host E. Taylor Atkins and his talk "Toshiko Akiyoshi’s ‘Kogun’: Narrating a Lone Soldier’s Experience in Nō Jazz" on February 24.

In March 1974, Lt. Onoda Hiroo emerged from the jungle on the Philippine island of Lubang, where he had been hiding for almost three decades after the end of the Pacific War. He immediately became a worldwide media sensation as an exemplar of samurai-like devotion to duty. Moved by his story and the tragedy of a life wasted for a fruitless war, jazz composer Toshiko Akiyoshi dedicated a composition to him. Entitled “Kogun” (lone soldier), the piece drew on thematic and narrative elements of medieval nō theater, situated within a jazz orchestral setting, to highlight this tragedy, thereby bringing to fruition her desire to create a seamless “blend” (yūgō) of Japanese music and the jazz idiom. This presentation also blends conventional cultural historical and musical analysis to argue for the landmark status of “Kogun” within jazz history.

E. Taylor Atkins is Distinguished Teaching Professor of History at Northern Illinois University. His major publications include Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Big BandKogun (2024); A History of Popular Culture in Japan, From the Seventeenth Century to the Present (second edition, 2022); Primitive Selves: Koreana in the Japanese Colonial Gaze, 1910-1945 (2010); Jazz Planet (editor, 2003); and Blue Nippon: Authenticating Jazz in Japan (2001), winner of the Association for Asian Studies’ John Whitney Hall Prize. He also plays bass for the Jazz in Progress Big Band and the Wild Blue Ukulele Orchestra and produces and hosts House of Funk on Hot Rocks Radio.

The talk runs from 2:00 to 3:00 pm in 4130 Posvar Hall (map).
