Upcoming documentary on Japanese baseball Homecoming: The Tokyo Series in Pittsburgh, February 23 and 24.

The 2026 documentary Homecoming: The Tokyo Series, referring to the Major League Baseball series played in Tokyo at the start of the 2025 season, will play in Pittsburgh from February 23 and 24.
Homecoming: The Tokyo Series explores Japan’s profound bond with baseball, culminating in the 2025 MLB Opening Day games in Tokyo, when hometown heroes Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Shota Imanaga, Seiya Suzuki, and Roki Sasaki return to the field where their journeys began. Through the lives of those shaped by the game, the film reveals how baseball bridges generations, shapes identity, and illuminates the connection between tradition and modern life. More than a chronicle of a sporting event, it is a portrait of a nation’s enduring love for baseball and the pride of watching its stars come home. Alongside the film, the filmmakers captured man-on-the-street interviews with American fans inside the Tokyo Dome who traveled to Japan for the games.
It is scheduled to play locally at the AMC Loews Waterfront, the AMC Westmoreland in Greensburg, the GQT Cinemas at the Pittsburgh Mills, and the Cinemark theaters in McCandless and Robinson. Tickets are available online.

September 3 is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Night at PNC Park as the Pittsburgh Pirates play the Los Angeles Dodgers. Several local groups are organizing outings, including the Japan Association of Greater Pittsburgh and Taiwan Aloha (which is looking to organize an annual Taiwan Community Day at the ballpark), though members of the general public can also purchase tickets and be eligible for an AAPI Pirates hat.

AAPI/Taiwan Community Day at PNC Park, September 3, as Pirates take on visiting Los Angeles Dodgers.

Taiwan Aloha will host a Taiwan Community Day at PNC Park on September 3, as the Pittsburgh Pirates take on the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers. This coinicides with other Asian and Asian-American events scheduled at the game, particularly because the Dodgers feature three Japanese baseball stars: Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Roki Sasaki. This Taiwan Community Day will honor the Sophiyah Liu, Taiwan's first female baseball umpire, who will throw out the first pitch, while ticket sales of 500 or more through the event link will ensure future Taiwan Community Days at the ballpark.

Taiwan Aloha is proud to partner with the Pittsburgh Pirates to host AAPI/Taiwan Day at PNC Park!

We are honored to feature Sophiyah Liu, Taiwan’s first female baseball umpire, as our ceremonial first pitch guest. Sophiyah’s groundbreaking role in Taiwan reflects the Pittsburgh Pirates’ leadership as the first MLB team to build a dedicated umpire room for women, making this a meaningful connection between Taiwan and the U.S.

This year marks a special AAPI/Taiwan Day, but if we reach 500 ticket sales through the link below, the Pirates will host a dedicated Taiwan Day every year going forward!

The first 500 ticket buyers will receive a Taiwan No. 1 jersey (sponsored by Taiwan Aloha), a Pirates baseball cap, and a Taiwan-themed souvenir at the game.

A portion of ticket proceeds will support Taiwan Aloha, helping to offset the cost of jerseys and guest arrangements.

Your support helps celebrate Taiwan, uplift women in sports, and promote global friendship through baseball.

Pirates sign Korean prospect Hyun-Seung Lee (이현승).

Baseball America reports the Pittsburgh Pirates have signed Korean infield prospect Hyun-Seung Lee (이현승) as one of their eight international free agents on January 15. Lee is a 16-year-old from Seoul, standing 6'1" and weighing 178 pounds. Baseball America, via Yonhap, notes his promising bat speed and power.

The Pirates have had a somewhat active scouting presence in South Korea for over 25 years, but have not made many notable high school signings. In 2023 the team did sign Shim Jun-seok, who was considered among the best Korean high school prospects at the time, but traded him to the Miami Marlins last season for Bryan de la Cruz (who has since left for the Atlanta Braves).

Pittsburgh Pirates sign top Korean pitching prospect Shim Jun-seok.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed 18-year-old pitcher Shim Jun-seok (심준석), considered among the best prospects in baseball and the top Korean prospect, according to Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com.
Shim, South Korea's top prospect, throws a fastball that tops out at 100 mph and consistently sits in the 94-96 range. He features a true 12-6 curveball and shows good command of all of his pitches. What’s more, the big and strong-bodied Shim has been praised for his clean arm action and his athleticism.

It’s also worth noting that his slider and changeup are also emerging and could eventually develop into plus pitches in the future. He’s been compared to a young Chan Ho Park since his early teens because of his poise, makeup and fastball.
Chan-ho Park also pitched for Pittsburgh at the end of his career. The Pirates have had Korean prospects in their system since the 1990s, but it's only been recently that they've made an effort to scout and sign top prospects from the KBO, and from East Asia in general.
