Wong Kar-Wai film series at Row House Cinema, November 5 - 11; special $28 all-you-can-see week pass available.

The Row House Cinema in Lawrenceville will present a series of films by legendary Hong Kong director Wong Kar-Wai, featuring six movies restored in 4K, from November 5 through 11.

Celebrate the Hong Kong director who reimagined filmmaking through abstract plotlines and vibrant colors. Don’t miss the brilliant 4k restorations of six Wong Kar-wai classics.

The lineup includes Happy Together (春光乍洩), Chungking Express ( 重慶森林), and In the Mood For Love (花樣年華) from November 5 through 11, a one-night screening of Fallen Angels (墮落天使) on November 5, a one-night-only screening of As Tears Go By (旺角卡門) on November 7, and a one-night-only screening of Days of Being Wild (阿飛正) on November 10. Tickets for individual shows are available online, as well as for a $28 week pass that allows you to see any and all movies during the film series (including repeats but exclusing any special events).

Dim sum and Cantonese food gain a bigger presence in Pittsburgh, as The Parlor Dim Sum works on a brick-and-mortar location. The Parlor has been a pop-up project of chef Roger Li---Umami, Nanban, and formerly Ki Pollo and Ki Ramen---for the last few years. The University of Pittsburgh's Global Studies Center will host Dr. Gina Anne Tam and "Protest as a Human Right in Hong Kong: A view from history" on September 30.

In the summer of 2019, Hong Kong-- former British colony, current special administrative region of the People's Republic of China-- was swept up by a large, sustained protest movement. The spark that lit this "revolution of our time" as protestors have deemed it was an extradition treaty with China, but quickly evolved into a broader movement for a more democratically representative government and autonomy from the People's Republic of China. In a stunning backlash against the movement, the PRC government announced they would unilaterally enact a sweeping national security law, quickly marking much of the previous year's protest movement illegal. In the past year, activists, lawyers, elected officials have been arrested and NGOs and media outlets shuttered at a dizzying pace, fundamentally altering the civic, legal, and cultural landscape of the city. Drawing upon Hong Kong's long history of grassroots activism-- and backlash against it-- from the early twentieth century through the present, this talk will offer a historical view of how protest became a cherished human right and a locus of popular power in Hong Kong, using this history to discuss the implications of the national security law on human rights in the city today.

The event runs from 4:30 to 5:45 pm, and will be held online.

Pittsburgh Chinatown celebratory event scheduled for May 2022.

The Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) Pittsburgh has moved its celebratory event for the city's Chinatown neighborhood from September 2021 to, tenatively, May 2022, due to safety concerns. Pittsburgh's historical Chinatown neighborhood was granted a state historical marker in March, after numerous attempts over the decades, and there is an online fundraiser to raise money toward the plaque and celebration.

After 12 long years and 4 separate attempts, non-profit OCA Asian Pacific American Advocates of Pittsburgh has finally succeeded in getting official Pennsylvania historical landmark status for Downtown’s old Pittsburgh Chinatown! You can help us complete this project! We need $5000 to complete the bronze plaque made to the state’s specifications describing the designation. We hope to have a celebratory event this September in person!

Pitt's Asian Studies Center offers language partner program.

The Asian Studies Center at the University of Pittsburgh is again offering its language partner program this school year.

The Asian Studies Center offers a language partnership program to match students learning Asian languages with native speakers of those languages. The Asian language learners will have an opportunity to practice their language with a peer, while native Asian language speakers will have opportunities to practice their English. Each partner will have the opportunity to build a relationship with another student across cultures. Hong Kong short film Chen Chen (陳陳) at ReelAbilities Film Festival, September 9 - 12.

The 22-minute short film Chen Chen (陳陳) from Kargo Chen will play at the ReelAbilities Film Festival, scheduled for the Carnegie Museum of Art and online from September 8 through 12.

In this heartfelt docudrama, Chen takes his home-ridden brother with cerebral palsy out for some real-world experiences, leading to a day neither will soon forget. (Adult content: sex, nudity)

This short film precedes the feature-length documentary, Re-Inventing the Wheel.

Hong Kong New Wave master Stanley Kwan’s unconventional biopic tells the tragic story of “Greta Garbo of China” — Ruan Lingyu, played by Maggie Cheung. Praised for her moving and emotive onscreen presence, Ruan’s private life, which was frequent fodder for the vicious Shanghai tabloids, began to mirror the melodramas which brought her fame, culminating in her suicide at age 24. Kwan and Cheung paint a kaleidoscopic yet intimate portrait of the ill-fated actress, deftly blending lush period drama, archival footage, and metatextual documentary sequences of Cheung reflecting on Ruan’s legacy.
