Pitt hiring Chinese-speaking Language Buddies, Program Assistants, for on-campus Chinese Language and Culture Summer Camp.

The University of Pittsburgh's Department of East Asian Languages & Literatures has a number of openings for Chinese speakers for its annual Chinese Language and Culture Summer Camp: Language Buddies, Program Assistant, Cultural Activity Leader, and Physical Activity Leader. These positions are for Pitt students, so the job ads and application portals may not be available to the general public.

The posting for Language Buddies:
The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Pittsburgh is hosting Chinese Language and Culture Summer Camp for local high school students from June 22 – July 10, 2020, on the Oakland campus. The Language Buddy will:
  • Work with the lead teachers to provide one-one-one practice in Chinese with high school students for one hour daily from 1:50-2:20 p.m.
  • Monitor student performance and progress, and fill in a short report after each session
  • Assist in the closing celebration party on July 10.
  • Attend the required training session on June 19, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
  • Completed or in the process of completing a college degree. Current undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply.
  • Must be authorized to work on Pitt campus (ex. OPT, CPT)
  • Be able to communicate effectively with students by articulating clearly and selecting appropriate vocabulary
  • Be comfortable working with students from diverse cultural backgrounds and students who may need special accommodations
  • Supplementary application material required: 1-minute video recording of self-introduction in Chinese.
The posting for Program Assistant:
The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Pittsburgh is hosting Chinese Language and Culture Summer Camp for local high school students from June 22 – July 10, 2020, on the Oakland campus. The program assistant will:
  • Work closely with program director and curriculum coordinator on preparing learning plans for language buddy sessions
  • Work with closely with language buddies (1) on their schedules, (2) go over lesson plans before each language buddy session, and (3) collect evaluation forms after.
  • Work closely with cultural activity leaders (1) on their schedules, (2) go over learning plans before each cultural activity session, (3) set up before each session and clean up after.
  • Take photos and videos during the activities, and upload to Box on daily basis. Create a program video for each week.
  • Help organize and assist in the closing celebration party on July 10.
  • Attend the required training session on June 19, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
  • Completed or in the process of completing a college degree
  • Must be authorized to work for the university (ex. OPT, CPT) or in the United States
  • Native or near-native Mandarin Chinese proficiency
  • Candidate with prior teaching experience preferred
The posting for Cultural Activity Leader:
The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Pittsburgh is hosting Chinese Language and Culture Summer Camp for local high school students from June 22 – July 10, 2020, on the Oakland campus. The Cultural Activity Leader will:
  • Work with lead teachers and create learning plans to teach the activities from the list below. Instruction should be conducted in target language to facilitate acquisition of the activity skills.
  • Teach once or twice a week
  • Assist in the closing celebration party on July 10.
  • Attend the required training session on June 19, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
  • Completed or in the process of completing a college degree
  • Must be authorized to work for the university (ex. OPT, CPT) or in the United States
  • Be able to teach one or more activities from the list below
    • Art: Chinese painting, calligraphy, paper cutting, Chinese knot, stamp carving, etc. (Supplementary application material may be asked: pictures of sample work)
    • Chess: Xiangqi, Wuziqi, Weiqi, etc.
The posting for Physical Activity Leader:
The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Pittsburgh is hosting Chinese Language and Culture Summer Camp for local high school students from June 22 – July 10, 2020, on the Oakland campus. The physical activity leader will:
  • Work with the lead teachers and teach the activities from the list below. Instruction should be conducted in target language to facilitate acquisition of the activity skills.
  • Teach daily
  • Assist in the closing celebration party on July 10.
  • Attend the required training session on June 19, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m
  • Completed or in the process of completing a college degree
  • Must be authorized to work for the university (ex. OPT, CPT) or in the United States
  • Be able to teach one or more activities from the list below
    • Tai Chi (Supplementary application material may be asked: a recording of sample work)
    • Chinese Martial Arts (Supplementary application material may be asked: a recording of sample work)
    • Chinese Yoyo
    • Square dance
    • Shuttlecock
    • Rope skipping
