Filipino-Icelandic singer-songwriter Yaelokre will perform in Pittsburgh on November 14.

If you ever feel as if music has lost its capacity for surprise, the beguiling wonder and infinite creativity of Yaelokre will respark your belief. The Filipino-Icelandic artist - real name Keath Ósk (they/it) - fuses three imaginative strands to their visionary expression: intimate, innocent folk infused with leftfield surrealism and instant pop accessibility; artwork which is intricately detailed and beautifully alluring; and storytelling which brings personal experience and poetry into rich, fable-like narratives. What’s more, all three of these elements are crafted by this one visionary artist.

The scale of the fantastical world they have created is vast, both in terms of narrative and lore. But its essence is relatively simple. The songs are set in the fictional world of Meadowlark and chart the adventures of four masked children who comprise a musical ensemble known at The Lark: Cole Seymour, Clémente Dearworth, Peregrine August, and Kingsley. They perform as representatives of The Harkers, mythical beings who express the fundamental principles of nature, wonder and chaos. What’s more, Yaelokre voices all of the different characters within their universe.

In Filipiñana, Isabel (Jorrybell Agoto) — a new “tee girl” at a luxury golf course – attempts to navigate the quiet luxury and ruthless hierarchical structure of Manila’s wealthy elite. Even as Isabel becomes increasingly entranced with the club’s president Dr. Palanca, she also seems to know secrets that point to Palanca’s dark history. The film’s highly artificial shots of composed pastel symmetries and minutely choreographed workers paint a portrait of Manila’s high society as simultaneously banal and terrifying. The luxurious facility echoes the country’s instabilities: its challenges from climate upheaval amid an increasingly wealthy elite, its history of violence, and its underlying class conflicts. First-time feature director Rafael Manual’s confident artisanship and darkly funny writing are remarkable, but Agoto is the standout star of the film, as a young woman who wants a different life than has been allocated to her. Her relationship with Dr. Palanca maps the Philippines’s past onto its present, showing how even the most elite can’t escape the realities in which they live.

ReelQ and the City of Asylum will present a screening of the 2025 documentary 10s Across the Borders on June 23.

Set in Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia. New York and elsewhere, “10s Across the Borders” is a pan-Asian queer film that confronts homophobia, transphobia, and racism while celebrating the region’s underground ballroom culture. As the title suggests, Sze-Wei Chan envisions a world where members of Ballroom communities far from New York can also score a perfect 10.

This film follows three leading characters of Southeast Asia’s ballroom scene—Teddy from Malaysia who ran away from his homophobic father, Xyza from the Philippines who found beauty in herself after being rejected by the modeling world, and Sun who was born to a Thai sex worker mother and European father.

In the film’s finale, the performers’ surreal performance cuts between Southeast Asia’s back alleys and New York’s bustling streets, dissolving boundaries of nation, gender, race, age, religion, and class to soar beyond the rainbow. This is Southeast Asia’s answer to the seminal documentary, the 1990 classic Paris is Burning.

Reel Q hosts one of the oldest LGBTQ+ film festivals in the world. Since 1985, Reel Q has remained steadfast in their mission and worked diligently to highlight the diverse experiences of our worldwide community. For the better part of a decade, City of Asylum has been partnering with Reel Q to bring unique, international queer films to audiences (for free!) in a series formerly known as “Reel Stories.” From dramas to documentaries to playful rom-coms, we are honored and delighted to serve as a platform for these beautiful works to reach new audiences.

More information about the documentary is available via its official site. The screening runs from 7:00 to 8:30 pm, both in person and online via livestream, and is free and open to the public. The in-person screening will take place at Alphabet City on the North Side (map). Registration for both modalities is required and can be completed online.

Pitt Filipino Students Association (FSA) Barrio, featuring RC AVENUE, March 28.

The University of Pittsburgh's Filipino Student Association will present its annual Barrio on March 28, which will feature a performance by pop/R&B artist RC AVENUE. It runs from 5:00 to 9:00 pm in the Assembly Room on the first floor of the William Pitt Union (map). From the Asian Studies Center newsletter:

“Barrio” means neighborhood or community in Tagalog. Pitt FSA’s Barrio event shares and celebrates Filipino culture through special guest performances, delicious Filipino food, singing & dancing, and more!

 

Barrio will feature special guest RC AVENUE. They are a Pop/R&B artist based in Los Angeles with over 200k monthly listeners on Spotify.

The theme is Alamat, meaning “legend” or “folklore” in Tagalog. Alamat honors the stories that connect generations and communities, celebrating Filipino heritage while also recognizing the shared experiences and stories of those at Pitt.

Dress theme will be Traditional Filipino cultural attire (modern/precolonial), cultural mythology, or fairytale-inspired dress.

Café Filipino returns April 25.

Café Filipino, a family-style Philippine Cuisine Experience from the Filipino American Association of Pittsburgh, is resuming monthly programming from April 25.

The event is brought to you by Cafe Filipino, our initiative to feature talented cooks within our community and showcase their signature dishes. The plan is to offer this event by popular demand as a way for us to bring a consistent fine-dining Filipino food experience to Pittsburgh. This will be a periodic fundraising event to cover the operating costs of our Philippine Center and other Fil-Am PGH programs.

The University of Pittsburgh's Asian Studies Center and the Filipino American Association of Pittsburgh will present a screening of the 2023 documentary Nurse Unseen on May 30. From the documentary's website:

NURSE UNSEEN explores the little-known history and humanity of the unsung Filipino nurses who risked their lives on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic while facing a resurgence of anti-Asian hate in the streets.

The movie starts at 6:30 pm in 121 Lawrence Hall (map), will be accompanied by snacks from FAAP, and will be followed by a discussion.
