Bringing Sound to Silence with AppalAsia, February 13 at City of Asylum's Alphabet City.

City of Asylum will present Bringing Sound to Silence with AppalAsia, a performance by a trio that combines Western and Chinese traditional music, on February 13.
Since the founding of AppalAsia in 2009, they have followed their passion for artistic collaboration between different cultures and disciplines beyond race, religion, and gender.

In a recent project, the group was asked to develop original compositions for the 1919 silent movie Broken Blossoms. In this performance, the group shares this project with us, playing a selection of original music and some folk/traditional tunes.

Broken Blossoms depicts the story of Cheng Huan, a Chinese immigrant who comes to London to spread the teachings of Buddhism but is quickly disillusioned by the social environment of the city. His path soon crosses with Lucy Burrows, a young woman enduring abuse from her alcoholic prizefighting father. The story of the protagonists’ intersecting lives explores themes of racism, abuse, discrimination of gender and religion, and oppression and violence against minorities. Amid these harsh realities, however, remains the hopeful presence of beauty and love. Despite the passage of a century since the film’s release, its commentary on prejudice and the value of freedom remains poignant reminders to this day.
The performance runs from 7:00 to 8:30 pm, and will take place both online and in person. Tickets are free but registration is required. Alphabet City is located at 40 W. North Ave. on the North Side (map).

1985 Akira Kurosawa film Ran (乱) at Row House Cinema, from December 26.

The 1985 Akira Kurosawa film Ran (乱) will play at the Row House Cinema from December 26 through January 5, 2023. A 2010 Washington Post review summarizes:
Based on Shakespeare's "King Lear" and set in 16th-century feudal Japan, Akira Kurosawa's 1985 antiwar epic is almost over the top with betrayal, battle and blood. At times, the red stuff flows like paint from the brush of Jackson Pollock. It's an angry and expressive spurt of pigment, emblematic of the director's rage -- the title is the Japanese character for "chaos" or "fury" -- and not a realistic body fluid.
Tickets are available online. The single-screen theater is located at 4115 Butler Street in Lawrenceville (map).

The Incline profiles Seiko Sisco and Waku Waku Baby.

In October the online newsletter The Incline profiled designer and chemist Seiko Sisco and her baby goods line Waku Waku Baby.
I am a Ph.D. chemist turned stay-at-home-mom turned creative small business owner. In 2019, I founded Waku Waku Baby, a handmade baby gifts shop that sells baby shoes and accessories that are cute, comfy and capture the magic of childhood. “Waku Waku” means to be happy and excited in Japanese; I wanted the shop name to reflect my Japanese roots and the feeling I get when I sew new baby items. Since launching Waku Waku Baby, I have dreamt of designing my own fabric patterns from my hand drawn illustrations. This year, I finally took the big leap to learning surface pattern design. I am so excited to showcase a sneak peek of my debut fabric patterns in collaboration with Waku Waku Baby this holiday season!

Pittsburgh Pirates acquire Ji-man Choi (최지만) from Tampa Bay.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired firstbaseman Ji-man Choi (최지만) from Tampa Bay. Choi, has played on four different teams over his seven years in the league, and has found his most success and longevity with the Rays over the last five years. As has been the fashion with the Pirates and seasoned players, he figures to provide a solid veteran presence at 1B, at least for part of the season before being moved near the deadline.

If Choi plays in a regular season game he will be the fifth Korean in Pittsburgh Pirates history: Chan-ho Park in 2010, Jung-ho Kang from 2015 through 2019, Hoy Park in 2021-2022, and Ji-hwan Bae in 2022, though the Pirates have had several other Korean prospects and players in their system over the decades.
