The 2001 Japanese film Spirited Away (千と千尋の神隠し) will play at the Rangos Giant Cinema on May 29, the final installment of a Studio Ghibli series this month.

In Hayao Miyazaki’s unforgettable film, “Spirited Away,” audiences are transported with Chihiro to an otherworldly bath house occupied by strange spirits. Join her on her journey to reunite with her parents and return to her own world on Fri., May 29 at 7 p.m.

2025 Japanese animated film Jinsei (無名の人生) in Pittsburgh, from June 12.

The 2025 Japanese animated film Jinsei (無名の人生) will play in Pittsburgh from June 12 through 25.

Simply put, Jinsei follows the life of one man over 100 years. Our main character’s life is broken up into chapters, distinguished by the evolution of his name, or rather the names he goes by. He is a child, an orphan, a budding J-pop star, an outcast, a leader, an oracle. Employing a lo-fi style, Suzuki immerses the viewer in this man’s life, and as each chapter evolves so does the picture’s framing, color palette and editing-style. Epic in scope, Jinsei is one of the most original Japanese animated films in years. Over nearly 2 years, newcomer Ryuya Suzuki wrote, directed, animated, and edited this tour-de-force by himself, determined to bring his captivating vision to life. Essential, experiential viewing, this is one that must be seen on the big screen. 

It plays at the Harris Theater in downtown's Cultural District (map), and tickets will go on sale on Thursday, May 28, at 10:00 am.

Wei Lai opened in March 2024 in McIntyre Square, and was one of several restaurants to open in the last few years offering high-quality, non-chain cuisine in the North Hills. The lack of dim sum in Pittsburgh was an oft-cited vacancy until the arrival of Wei Lai and, a month later, HK Dim Sum in North Oakland.

BTS World Tour 'ARIRANG' in Busan: Live Viewing will play throughout the Pittsburgh area on June 13.

The historic journey continues. Following the record-breaking opening of the ‘ARIRANG’ world tour, pop royalty BTS returns to the iconic Busan Asiad Main Stadium for a monumental homecoming, broadcast live to cinemas around the world. This marks their poignant return to the very venue where they shared their final full-group performance before enlistment in 3 years and 8 months. Spanning 34 cities with 85 shows, this tour sets a new pinnacle as the most extensive tour ever by a Korean artist. Most notably, the performance falls on June 13—BTS’s debut anniversary—adding a profound layer of symbolism as the group celebrates their legacy and future. Please note that broadcasts in some territories are scheduled later to accommodate local time zones.

Pitt hiring Teaching Assistant Professor of Korean for a Fall 2026 start.

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Pittsburgh is hiring a Teaching Assistant Professor of Korean for a Fall 2026 start.

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a Teaching Assistant Professor position in Korean language and linguistics, pending budgetary approval. The successful candidate should possess primary disciplinary training in Korean linguistics, Korean as a Second Language, Language and Literacy, and/or a closely related discipline. A Ph.D. in Korean Studies or a related field is required by the time of appointment. 

The appointment starts on August 15, 2026. The teaching load is six courses per year. The appointee will teach current undergraduate courses in our Korean language program, develop new courses in the area of their specialization, help develop a new Korean major, and participate in the department’s interdisciplinary MA program. The successful candidate must demonstrate strengths as a teacher at all levels. The candidate must have a native or near-native user of Korean and English in all language skill areas. In addition, the new hire should be willing to take an active leadership role in the vigorous growth of the Korean program and collaborate closely with the established Korean language program.  

The intellectual environment at the University of Pittsburgh provides ample opportunities for interdisciplinary cooperation, and the successful candidate is expected to interface with colleagues in the Department of Linguistics as well as language faculty in other departments.

Yaqiao Yang (often referred to as Yang Comedy) is a rapidly rising Chinese-born stand-up comedian based in the United States, known for her sharp wit, daring, and frequently viral stand-up material. As of early 2026, she is recognized as a standout performer in the US comedy scene, notably earning a "Golden Ticket" on the popular live podcast and stand-up show Kill Tony.

University of Pittsburgh hiring part-time Chinese instructor.

The University of Pittsburgh's Department of East Asian Languages & Literatures is hiring a part-time Chinese instructor.

The Chinese Program of the Department of East Asian Languages & Literatures at the University of Pittsburgh, pending budgetary approval, seeks an instructor to teach several sections of 5-credit First-Year Chinese recitation classes in Fall 2026. The successful Candidate will need to have in hand, at the time of the hire, a MA in Chinese language pedagogy (or related field) and experience in teaching Chinese language courses at college level. 

 

The appointment is for the Fall semester of 2026. Reappointment in Spring 2027 may be possible, depending on student enrollment. These classes will be taught in person.
