The quest for a Chinese Sister City began earlier in the year, as the Post-Gazette noted on March 29, 1982, ahead of Caliguri's visit to Wuhan:
Mayor Caliguri will lead a contingent to China's Steel City April 30, but a bit of Pittsburgh will find its way to Wuhan long before then.
Some of the materials being sent ahead to the mainland city are a photo book of Pittsburgh and literature from its universities, ballet, symphony and chamber of commerce.
Even some Pirate T-shirts and Penguin pennants are included, as well as a copy of the city budget.
The mayor is leading a group of industrial, banking, and academic leaders on a 10-day to two-week trip to establish a sister-city relationship with Wuhan, which is China's steel capital.
The central China city also has a geographic similarity to Pittsburgh--it, too, has three rivers.
