Free Chinese, Japanese, Korean classes in Pittsburgh in May.

The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will continue to offer free Chinese, Japanese, and Korean classes at some of its branches this May. Check out the class information below in addition to its language resources on the shelves and online.

As the library notes: these classes are free; registration is not required; no materials are needed and nothing needs to be bought; new participants are welcome at any time; classes are for adults (unless otherwise noted) but well-behaved young people are welcome to join as well.

Chinese
  • Chinese for Beginners - Beginner level language classes are for those who are new to the language or want to refresh their skills. All adult language classes are free and you do not need to register. (May 11, 18, 25 at 2:00 pm in Squirrel Hill; May 12, 19 at 2:00 pm in Oakland)
  • Chinese II - Level II language classes are for those who already have a basic understanding of the language and want to continue learning. All adult language classes are free and you do not need to register. (May 11, 18, 25 at 3:00 pm in Squirrel Hill; May 12, 19 in Oakland)
  • Chinese Conversation Club - Would you like an opportunity to converse in Chinese? This informal conversation club is open to anyone with a prior knowledge of Chinese. (May 23 at 6:00 pm in Oakland)
  • Let's Learn Chinese - Hello! Hola! Konnichiwa! Through books, rhymes and songs, children will pick up vocabulary while boosting their listening and literacy skills. Exploring languages during childhood can pave the way to becoming multilingual later in life. (May 16, 23, 30 at 6:30 pm in Oakland)

Japanese
  • Japanese for Beginners - Japanese for Beginners is an introduction for those who are new to Japanese or consider themselves a little bit rusty. (May 13, 27 at 6:30 pm in Oakland)
  • Japanese II - Japanese II is geared toward those who already have a basic understanding of Japanese and are interested in increasing proficiency. Ability to read and write hiragana is required to take this class. (May 14, 28 at 6:30 pm in Oakland)
  • Japanese Class - Learn Japanese from fluent speakers in a fun and friendly environment. All are welcome. (May 15 at 6:30 pm in East Liberty)
  • Japanese Conversation Club - Japanese Conversation Club is an opportunity for intermediate to advanced speakers of Japanese to come together and converse as well as to learn about and enjoy Japanese culture. (May 21 at 6:00 pm in Oakland)
  • Storytime: Japanese and English - Celebrate our city’s diverse culture as we explore new words through songs, action rhymes and stories in both English and Japanese for children and their parents or caregivers. For families with children age birth – age 5. (May 21 at 11:00 am in East Liberty)

Korean

  • Korean for Beginners - Korean for Beginners focuses on reading, grammar, and basic conversation. (May 11, 18, 25 at 1:00 pm in Oakland)
  • Korean II - Korean II is geared toward those who already have a basic understanding of Korean and are interested in increasing proficiency. (May 11, 25 at 11:00 am in Oakland)
