A Chinese express mail service, KS Express, has moved into 2212 Murray Ave (map). It's the second such business to open on the Squirrel Hill street, after the Shanghai-based shipping and logistics chain STO Express (申通快) opened in January.

Hayao Miyazaki film series coming to Row House Cinema in December.

Lawrenceville's Row House Cinema recently announced a Hayao Miyazaki film series to run from December 9 through 16. The four movies---Ponyo (崖の上のポニョ), Kiki's Delivery Service (魔女の宅急便), Howl's Moving Castle (ハウルの動く城), and Castle in the Sky (天空の城ラピュタ)---haven't played in Pittsburgh theaters since their original releases. Row House ran a MIyazaki series last December with four different movies.

The 2015 documentary Live From UB will play at the University of Pittsburgh on November 3. A synopsis, from the documentary's official site:

LIVE FROM UB explores the small but vibrant rock scene in Mongolia’s capital, Ulaanbaatar (also called ‘UB’). It blends the story of one band creating original Mongolian rock with interviews from experts and Mongolian rock legends. Rock was a catalyst in the democratic revolution of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Now, more than twenty years later, the first generation to grow up in this new society is making its own music. Unlike the generation before them, the new music makers grew up watching MTV and can access music from anywhere in the world in an instant. But these young Mongolians are defying the forces of globalization and using modern music to both explore and assert their own unique heritage. Like Mongolia at large, they are eager to be recognized beyond their borders, but without sacrificing their identity.

Ming Wong re-interprets cinema and popular culture to consider how identity is constructed, reproduced and circulated. Through imperfect translations and re-enactments, the artist portrays multiple key characters irrespective of language, gender, ethnicity, nationality or historical period. His videos, photographs, installations and performances uncover the gaps and slippages that haunt the notions of “authenticity” and “originality” in self and society. The Singapore-born, Berlin-based artist represented Singapore at the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009 with his solo presentation Life of Imitation, which was awarded a Special Mention.

Shaolin Warriors at Byham Theater, March 21.

The Shaolin Warriors, a touring martial arts group from China, will perform in Pittsburgh on March 21, 2017. The Byham Theater summarizes (inadvertently revealing a copy-paste from another theater's site):

In this all-new, fully choreographed theatrical production, the Shaolin Warriors bring remarkable skill, stunning movement, and death-defying martial-arts prowess to the Popejoy stage. The Zen Buddhist monks of the Shaolin temple begin training at a very young age in mental and physical disciplines. They perfect the art of hand-to-hand and weapons combat, performing feats live on stage typically seen only in the movies.

The University of Pittsburgh's Department of East Asian Languages & Literatures is hiring an Assistant Instructor of Chinese for the 2017-18 school year. An excerpt from the job posting:

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures of the University of Pittsburgh seeks one full-time, one-year contract (renewable) assistant instructor for the Chinese language program, for appointment beginning August 28, 2017, pending budgetary approval. Duties include teaching both recitations and lectures of language courses, as well as working closely with the language coordinator to contribute to the overall effectiveness of the Chinese language program. Applicants should send a letter of application, CV, three letters of reference (one letter should comment explicitly on the candidate’s teaching ability), a statement of teaching philosophy in both Chinese and English, representative samples of narrative and quantitative teaching evaluations, transcripts from the last university attended, and an unedited video of teaching beginning students (DVD or a URL of the video). Priority screening will be given to applications received on or before December 9, 2016

The successful candidate will possess native or near-native proficiency in both Chinese and English, hold an MA degree in Chinese language pedagogy, foreign language pedagogy, or a related field, and have at least one year experience teaching Chinese at the college level in a North American institution.

North Korean film festival at Pitt, November 18 and 19.

The University of Pittsburgh's Asian Studies Center will present a North Korean film festival on November 18 and 19 at the Frick Fine Arts Auditorium and the University Club. The four films tentatively scheduled are: An Emissary Unreturned (돌아오지 않은 밀사), Fate of Kum Hui and Un Hui (금희와 은희의 운명), Flower Girl (꽃파는 처녀), and Pulgasari (불가사리).

Nakama again "Best Japanese Restaurant" Pittsburgh City-Paper readers' poll; Sesame Inn unseated as "Best Chinese".

The Pittsburgh City-Paper released the results of its Best of Pittsburgh readers' poll and Nakama was again named "Best Japanese Restaurant". It is a near-perennial winner in the City-Paper poll, earning the most votes in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2015. Umami and Umi placed second and third, respectively. Umami, which opened in April, was voted "Best Sushi" in the city.

Shadyside's China Palace was voted "Best Chinese" in the city, with Bloomfield's Wai Wai placing third. Sesame Inn and its four locations placed second, the first time in the poll's decade-plus history that it has not placed first.

Japanese punk group Shonen Knife in Pittsburgh, November 3.

The Japanese punk group Shonen Knife will play at Cattivo on November 3. The band, formed in Osaka in 1981, has opened for Sonic Youth and Nirvana and describes their sound as "Ramones meets the Beatles brand of sticky-sweet punk-pop." The group was last in Pittsburgh in 2011.

Cattivo is located at 116 44th Street in Lawrenceville (map). The show starts at 8:00 pm and tickets for the 21-and-older concert are $12 in advance or $15 at the door.

Pittsburgh Taiko Beginner Session, October 15.

Pittsburgh Taiko will hold a beginner session in Shadyside on October 15 to introduce learners to traditional Japanese percussion (taiko / 太鼓).

Over the course of the workshop, you will learn basic movements and techniques used to play taiko.

Drumsticks will be provided, as will earplugs (although you’re welcome to bring your own if you have some).

The session runs from 3:00 to 5:30 pm at Winchester Thurston City Campus Lower School on Morewood Ave. in Shadyside (map). More information about the session, as well as some tips for Saturday---don't wear street shoes, for example---are available at the Pittsburgh Taiko website. Registration can be done on the Japan-America Society of Pennsylvania website; the cost is $5 for JASP members, $10 for students, and $15 for everyone else. Takao Kawaguchi: About Kazuo Ohno at Warhol Museum, October 13.

Dancer Takao Kawaguchi will perform About Kazuo Ohno at the Warhol Museum on October 13. The Japan Society offers a description of the performance and Kawaguchi's seven-city tour this fall:

Takao Kawaguchi, one of Japan’s most sought-after dancers and former member of Dumb Type, challenged himself to literally "copy" the dances of the late butoh master and co-founder Kazuo Ohno, from archival recordings. What results is a hauntingly beautiful illusory duet between Kawaguchi and Ohno. Presented just weeks before what would have been Ohno’s 110th birthday, About Kazuo Ohno attempts to reconstruct Ohno’s timeless masterpieces, including Admiring La Argentina (1977) and My Mother (1981), phrase by phrase. This work offers the opportunity to explore and question the portrayal of gender, specifically femininity, that appears within Ohno’s repertoire.

Pittsburgh is the last stop on the US tour that included performances in New York and Los Angeles. The Warhol is located at 117 Sandusky St. on the Northside (map). Tickets are $12 for students and $15 for the general public, and are available online.

Paprika and Japanese Culture Society, October 14 at Row House Cinema.

The Anime Film Series opens at Lawrenceville's Row House Cinema on October 14, and the Pittsburgh Japanese Culture Society will be there during the initial screening of Paprika (パプリカ).

Anime Film Series at Row House Cinema, October 14 - 20.

The Row House Cinema will present five Japanese animated movies as part of its Anime Film Series that runs from October 14 - 20: 1973's Belladonna of Sadness (哀しみのベラドンナ), Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (カウボーイビバップ 天国の扉), Millennium Actress (千年女優), Studio Ghibli's 1988 Grave of the Fireflies (火垂るの墓), and Paprika (パプリカ). The film share common themes beyond the country of origin and style of production, though, according to the theater's website:

Japanese animation breaks many traditional notions of what animated films "should" be in in terms of style, genre, and audience—maybe that's why we love it so much. This week we're featuring anime movies geared towards an adult audience with some heavy subject matter, including rape, war, viral terrorism, and mind control.
